Application of Fluorination Technology in Plastic Processing.

The fluorination of plastic surfaces is a chemical reaction between a solid-phase and a gas-phase reactant. The nitrogen-fluorine mixed gas acts on the surface of the plastic material, transforming its surface structure into a thin functional layer, which determines how the material interacts and influences the outside world.
The fluorination of plastic surfaces is a chemical reaction between a solid-phase and a gas-phase reactant. A nitrogen-fluorine mixed gas acts on the surface of the plastic material, transforming its surface structure into a thin functional layer, which determines how the material interacts and influences the external environment. The reaction process is determined by the concentration of reactants, temperature, and their respective chemical properties. The results of fluorination are related to the structure and chemical composition of the plastic material, and the presence or absence of additives, the type of additives, and the concentration of pigments and dyes can all affect the outcome. In fact, almost all plastic surfaces can be treated with fluorine. The activation effect is caused by the interaction between fluorine and plastic, so the intensity of the fluorination process can be achieved by adjusting the concentration of fluorine and the number of fluorination cycles. The surfaces of films and complex-shaped products can be fluorinated.
According to different application scenarios, fluorination systems can be divided into two types: one is a continuous or semi-continuous online system, and the other is a discontinuous offline system. In online systems, fluorination occurs during the manufacturing process, for example: fluorination treatment of products occurs simultaneously during the production of blow-molded packaging containers. For offline processes, the fluorination process is independent of the production process of the products. Both processes can be applied in large-scale production according to different situational requirements. The functions obtained from the fluorination technology treatment of product surfaces can be divided into two categories: one is barrier function, and the other is surface activation function. In the barrier effect, the fluorine content in the mixture is 1%-20%. After modification treatment, the surface of the product can withstand various types of solvents, such as chemical products, organic solutions, oils, and fuels. The fluorinated surface can also protect plastic products from moisture, steam, and various gases with odors. Fluorinated surfaces can even resist damage caused by bacteria and microorganisms.
Unlike fluorination barriers, the surface activation function treatment process can increase surface energy and make the surface more hydrophilic. Typical applications of this technology in plastic processing include: pretreatment for printing, surface structuring and bonding, production of natural and synthetic fibers, production of films and filter materials, and production of fiber-reinforced construction materials. Plastic containers, polypropylene fiber concrete, coatings, paints, inks, and the printing and electronics industries all involve fluorination treatment of plastic products. Barrier fluorination of plastic fuel tanks significantly reduces the volatility of hydrocarbons, achieving a barrier effect that replaces multilayer co-extrusion. The online fluorination process during blow molding significantly reduces the diffusion of fuel and solvents from tanks and plastic containers. The traditional method of reinforcing concrete mixtures is to mix in loose steel wires and other components for foundations, pavements, and surfaces of buildings without load requirements. Adding fluorinated polypropylene fibers to concrete significantly increases the stability and moldability of the concrete, and the concrete becomes lighter and lasts longer. Using fluorinated activated surface coatings can significantly improve the adhesion of paint surfaces and make the effect more durable. Complex-shaped three-dimensional products and films can be activated with fluorination. In the semiconductor industry, achieving strong connections is crucial, so when chemical polishing of semiconductors is needed, fluorine can effectively improve production results. To allow window glass to slide along the rubber strip guide, manufacturers must flock or dip-coat the surface of the rubber strip. Fluorination technology can activate the surface of the rubber strip, resulting in a more durable and smoother sliding guide strip. Fluorination technology has many applications in the plastic processing industry, such as hollow blow-molded containers, complex-shaped injection molded parts, fibers, composites, films, and foam materials.
